Description
Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are butterflies found in many regions of North and South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. They prefer open landscapes, such as meadows, gardens and pastures. Their diet consists of nectar and pollen, which they suck from flowers. They are an important part of the ecosystem as they serve as pollinators for many plant species. The females lay their eggs on the leaves of milkweed (Asclepias), on which the larvae hatch. After a few weeks, they pupate and hatch as moths. The moths live only a few weeks, but those that hatched in the fall overwinter and fly back to their birthplaces in the spring.Reference: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchfalter
