π No waves to disrupt the vibe.
π
Seagulls judge. The sun sets.
π I don't mind.

© File Usage Guidelines This post on megagroundsloth.deππ I spent my vacation on Baltrum at the campsite. That way, I felt especially close to the completely car-free island. The campsite is located right in the nature reserve of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, surrounded by dunes and directly adjacent to the salt marshes.
β±οΈ Since school holidays hadnβt started yet and I was the first camper of the year, I had the place mostly to myself. Only over the long weekend starting with Ascension Day were there a few other campers. The site belongs to the youth education center of the Lower Saxony Gymnastics Association and is managed and maintained voluntarily by its members. Many things on the site were built by the young people themselves, such as a shelter and seating areas.
π΅π¦π³πͺΊπΎ During the day, you occasionally hear children playing, but at dusk and during the night, thereβs no sign of people. You hear the trees rustling in the wind, the flapping of the tent canvas, and a choir of countless birds. In the morning, a pheasant crows to wake you. It's currently breeding seasonβaround 300 different bird species are counted in the East Frisian Islands region in May. The campsite is located right between the two most important habitats: dune landscapes and salt marshes. Thereβs also a small stand of trees on the site, and nearby youβll find wet meadows and moorlands. When you open your tent in the morning, the first thing you see is numerous rabbits scattering in all directions.
π¦β οΈ A mysterious discovery: after the other campers had left, they left behind a skull. After a bit of research, it turned out to be a seal skull, which they most likely found on the eastern end of the island. Thatβs where seals spend their youth from autumn to spring.
π Altogether, I spent 10 nights in the tent, and the weather was mostly good. It was an extraordinary experienceβdefinitely worth repeating!
β¨ After my return home, I noticed that my senses were heightened. I perceived smells, tastes, and sounds with particular intensity.

π₯³β¨οΈ Today I turn 39! I'm enjoying the day all to myself on the German North Sea island of Baltrum. It's the smallest of the populated East Frisian Islands. I've visited here several times since I was a small child. Baltrum is so small that there are no cars and no street names, only house numbers.
β³οΈπͺ The last time I was here was 23 years ago, at the age of 16. The photos show me when I was about 3-4 years old (1989/1990), and the others when I was 6 (1992).
πΆπ¦· I remember losing my very first baby tooth on Baltrum. But you can't see it, because it happened on the last day. As a child, my hair was quite lightβbut yes, that's really me!
ππ In the early 90s, there were lots of pheasants and rabbits on Baltrum, and they were very friendly. But that hasn't been the case for decades. Today you can still see them occasionally, but back then there were a lot of them!
ππ¦β±οΈ I remember the girl I played with on the beach, and I also remember that a small seahorse and several starfish washed up into the hole we dug.
π΄π³ I was a bit sceptical about the horse (Norwegian Fjord Horse) because I didn't really like feeding it by hand. I was once bitten by a donkey, and that scared me. But I wasn't afraid to get on the horse and ride it. I have many memories of Baltrum, and that's why I'm spending my birthday in this special place. I'll have a detailed report as soon as I get back.

π After a long period of reluctance, I've started hiking again. A little over three weeks ago, I was inspired to take the very first bus early in the morning to Oberreifenberg. From there, it took me about an hour to reach the summit of the GroΓer Feldberg (881 m), the highest mountain in the Taunus Mountains.
πͺ¨ I took a breakfast break on the Brunhildisfelsen (Brunhilde Rock). This rock is said to have taken its name from the Norse Siegfried legend, according to which the Valkyrie Brunhilde was put into a deep sleep here by Odin and, as one of his many heroic deeds, was awakened by the famous dragon slayer Siegfried. The rock was first mentioned in documents in 1043 as "lectulus Brunhildi" (Brunhilde's little bed).
π Because I set off so early, I had the entire mountain to myself. I didn't meet a single other person. The most striking buildings are the television tower, the observation tower, and several transmission masts.
π§ I continued downhill toward Oberursel. There you pass the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, a 550-kilometer-long section of the former outer border of the ancient Roman Empire. Parts of the border wall are still visible, as are the remains of watchtowers.
πΌ The descent was strenuous, as it was almost entirely downhill for several kilometers. I was glad when I finally reached the valley. Along the way, I saw lots of yellow broom in bloom.
π Things became more pleasant when I was able to hike along the Urselbach stream to my final destination, the Oberursel-Hohemark train station. The last photo doesn't show the Urselbach stream, but a nearby pool. In total, it was 17-18 km. I've done two more hikes since then, which I'll report on another day.

π I guess you weren't expecting me anyway, so I might as well just get lost in the woods and eat the eggs myself.
π¨βπ» The image was created using ChatGPT and a selfie. I instructed ChatGPT to create an Easter bunny with my face like the one in the uploaded photo. The result was enhanced in Adobe Photoshop with Firefly AI and refined with noise and artifact removal ( @hilpert.solutions ).

π΅π€π¦ I haven't had a stye since I was a child, and now I look like I've been given a black eye. Two styes right next to each other, inside.
I look like Two-Face: One side like a sinister character, and the other side like the cuddly sloth everyone loves.
But they have already burst, and the swelling is going down. βοΈ

© File Usage Guidelines This post on megagroundsloth.deAnger performs better β why platforms like Threads reward anger
π΅βπ« On text-based platforms like Threads, it's particularly clear: Those who are loud are heard. Those who evoke emotion are rewarded. And those who express anger generate reach.
π€― This is less due to ill will β but rather to the algorithms. They optimize for engagement, not quality. The more people comment, discuss, or get upset, the more visible the post becomes. Anger clicks. Polarization works. And the platform grows with it.
π΅ The result: The ripcord is getting shorter and shorter. Differentiation is losing relevance. What counts is the impact of the emotion β not the substance of the statement.
π€ This isn't just a problem for the culture of discussion. It's also changing how we think and speak β public discourse is becoming a stimulus-response machine. Those who remain silent disappear. Those who speak loudly win.
βοΈ The question is: Do we really want this?
π§ I'm 38 years old. I'm an adult. I often see posts where I'd like to contribute something because I find some of the topics very relevant. But then I see people insulting each other like they're in kindergarten. I don't want to be insulted and abused just because my statement isn't good enough or doesn't fit into someone's narrative. I don't want to look at my phone and be confronted with aggression there. I also don't want to constantly wait for something like that to happen. Everyone loses their temper at some point, but it shouldn't be so normalized.
π In my opinion, anyone who constantly becomes abusive because someone expresses an unpleasant opinion has a major problem with their own emotional regulation. For me, since I have ADHD, the topic of emotional regulation is very important. I've invested many years in therapy and don't want to be constantly bombarded with such immature behavior.
π Pull yourselves together! βοΈ

© File Usage Guidelines This post on megagroundsloth.deNobody wants to be seen as something they are not. Sloths are called lazy, even though they simply move at their own speed for their own reasons. Nobody can read minds. Perhaps a sloth feels limited by its nature. Perhaps sloths want to run or swing through the treetops like monkeys. But they recognize their limitations, they learn to accept themselves, and in doing so become wise. Why does the sloth cross the road? Because it wants to get to the other side? Maybe. If sloths could talk, we should listen to them.
